Every year they would get a bonus profit sharing check right around Christmas time. It was a few thousand bucks. That was a lot of money for the late 1990s. It would be equivalent to 8 or 9 grand today. Over the years, that profit sharing check shrunk due to theft. Nowadays, it is nothing because this country is now a fully Jewified Niggered country filled with dipshits like you. Hardworking honest people don't get that check anymore thanks to you. >>509000360 (OP)(((Hollywood))) fucked itself over. They sold streaming as dirt cheap access to a whole library of media and succeeded in mostly killing off cable TV and physical media sales and mortally wounding theaters by throwing new movies on streaming platforms shortly after release. >rise of internet causes filesharing to become a thing
>netflix comes along, provides cheap and convenient access to a wide library of media
>piracy decreases
>countless new streaming services pop up, prices skyrocket, companies begin putting ads in streaming services you pay for
>intrusive DRM (denuvo) pushed into games
>piracy begins increasing again
it's really simple, if companies provide a quality product for a reasonable price people won't go through the trouble of pirating. if they get greedy and make legitimate media unappealing then people will just go back to piracy.
I'm an adult with reasonable income and piracy is almost never as convenient as modern digital distribution anymore. That was the explicit goal of Steam. The only shit I actually pirate is what's unavailable or simply worse than the original versions like emulating GameCube games. It's part of why companies like Nintendo are retarded. People want to give them money but they're on some autistic Disney Vault bullshit philosophy about it so you're better off sailing the seven seas. Emulators and d/recompilations are the definitive way to play some games because the developers just sit on the source code and refuse to do the work that unpaid nerds on Github do for free.

As a favela monke i can say that i grew up on pirated roms and even shit like pirated CS 1.6. As someone who's almost in their 30's now, i WON'T spend my money on digital shit. I don't mind spending 10 to 20 bucks on a game, but if they are asking $70 to $80 i'm gonna pirate it 11 times out 10.
Now, do i mind paying $70 on a physical game that i REALLY like? Not at all. It's expensive, but it's mine and it retains it's resale value - specially Nintendo shit. So, not only it's a great hobby, but i can be a useful way to "preserve" your money.
Americans don't have to worry about shit like exchange rates, but south american niggas do and i can say, in my life time the dolar went from being worth 1.50 of brazilian currency to almost 6 of it (hence why physical games can "preserve your money", even if it sounds stupid)
I mean, i don't buy shit as an investment, but if i'm gonna spend so much money on something is good to know that it's not entirely a waste of money.

>>509004493Physical media is a pain in the ass though. Can break, scratch, be stolen, lost and takes up space, which I hate as someone who loves convenience and tries to keep belongings as minmal as possible. When you buy games on steam, you're only buying a license. That kinda bothers me because some games are still expensive and the same price as physical and you can't resell it but as for the other major downside, which is losing access to the games you bought because steam went out of business or you were permabanned for calling someone a tranny, I think that's low risk but still bothers me and there really isn't an alternative. GOG is good for indie and some mainstream games but can't compete with Steam's library.

>>509006364Not pirating. I would pirate a triple A game if I can but buy an indie game I like. Would buy Bodycam on Steam and pirate The Last of Us on my CFW PS3 when I want to replay it.
>>509000360 (OP)Piracy is a service problem, not a pricing issue. Do you have streaming services? It's a god damn maze full of bugs that never works properly, loses tracks of things, will still block you from content even if you pay, lacks very common sense features it used to have, and even now are starting to bring ads. No fucking shit people are pirating because it's easier to find what you want and actually watch it. When piracy was massively declining it was the era of netflix just starting out where everything was simple and easy, gaming piracy mostly is dead due to steam anyways except for when publishers themselves fuck up a release in some way or when consoles companies are being shitty like nintendo.
Piracy isn't stealing, it's competition, and if companies want it to stop then their services must provide a better experience. Music figured out how to be better, PC gaming figured it out too, now video media and console gaming need to figure it out.

In a vacuum where price doesn't exist, yes, then the situation depends on the service. But price does exist.
>Piracy isn't stealing, it's competitionPiracy is stealing. It's not a 1 to 1 like they try to make it out to be (ie, 1 pirated file = 1 lost sale), but you are robbing the creators of the money you'd have to spend to see the product. I can't stand people who keep saying it's "victimless" or in the right. I'm not even against piracy, I just don't like people getting on their high horses and spouting nonsense.

>>509008468>creatorsThey're literally poor whores of capitalism that worship their masters. Nothing their labour produces is worth anything.
>>509007639If you ever want to make money, you should make it as easy as possible for a customer to consume your content. I used to pay for streaming services too but one day got so frustrated trying to navigate in combination with the upteenth price hike I said fuck it. The platform combination thing is too ridiculous, favorites and current progress are never tracked right between them, if you pay for it in one place it doesn't unlock the same series in others so you're sitting there confused af trying to avoid paying a second time, extremely basic features like being able to navigate specific episodes of a season are simply unavailable often so when the service inevitably fucks up and puts you back to episode 1 you have to sit there and literally fast forward seasons to get to where you were before. And now there are ads sometimes. Why pay more for a miserable experience when I can keep whatever series I want neatly in organized folders or websites better displayed than the actual streamer's and watch with zero hassle? It can take me upwards 5-10 minutes to watch what I want off their service depending how much their stuff fucks up, but takes me 10 seconds pirating.
There really does need to be a single subscription fee and everything's UI needs a complete overhaul, I don't even have a good suggestion because it's so beyond fucked up now that it should be remade from scratch.

>>509009325>download a 2GB game on 56kDwarf Fortress on DialUp?
>>509008468>It's BOTH a pricing and service problem. When it is too expensive, yes, and understandable after the 20th price hike. But even then it's a question of if service improvements warrant the increased cost over 0, so still a service issue. I only pirated due to price when I had no money, otherwise it's service. And quite frankly if someone has no money then it isn't a lost sale anyways.
>but you are robbing the creators of the money you'd have to spend to see the product.Depends. I don't mean to be pedantic, but you got to ask what creators are actually selling and to whom. Creators are not seeing royalty deals or something per download, this isn't the old music business. They make money off leases to streaming services. Not tickets to views. Sometimes flat fee, sometimes percentage of viewership. In other words they are not selling to you in the first place, but to the streaming service of which you reject. Perhaps for games you can make the argument of theft, and that is a whole other discussion of being justifiable or not. But I am mostly talking of streaming right now because that is what is mostly pirated today. And for streaming, no, it actually is direct competition because it is mostly the streaming service losing revenue or whose poor service is losing revenue on behalf of the producer depending on their deal structure.

>>509008468>robbing the creatorsNo one works for free, creators always get paid unless they're trading all of their salary for IP equity. If it's going to be profitable for the people funding it is another issue. And I'm not even anticapitalist, it's just that digital media is different from everything else. Digital media can be perfectly replicated inifinitely without incurring any further costs, unlike a loaf of bread. Developing and maintaining platforms with recommendation algorithms etc. to deliver content is a separate issue but you shouldn't have to consume content in that environment if you don't want to. Hosting and distributing is also a non issue. Ultimately, digital products like music, a movie or a show will rarely fail because of piracy and if you're just making it less profitable by pirating, it should only matter if you're not robbing from obscenely rich companies and individuals who aren't very moral themselves.
>>509000687what is this deep web you are referring to? You literaly can just type "(insert piracy target) free download for ( personal os) "and you will most likely find a zip folder for it. why do you retards treat piracy like this mystical activity done only by those who are initiated? >>509009571>They make money off leases to streaming services. Not tickets to views. Sometimes flat fee, sometimes percentage of viewership. In other words they are not selling to you in the first place, but to the streaming service of which you rejectWho do you think is paying these people to make content? If the streaming service can tell by some internal metric that no one is streaming a series or it;s not popular, do you think they'll keep paying for the right to stream it or request new episodes or whatever? The system is different than it used to be, yes, but it's the same at its heart. If there is no money in something, it won't be supported in the future. You can think even bigger picture too. If a streaming service isn't profitable, then it will shut down.
Also the part about "competition" is bullshit. Scene and P2P groups ripping shit from Amazon or Netflix aren't competition because they're not creating anything. The content would not be there without Amazon, but it would still be there without ripping groups. It's a false equivalence.

Hosting and distributing is also a non issue.Moving a shitload of data at scale is a MASSIVE issue and expensive. Delivering content is the main hurdle. >>509008950I've run into some of those issues as well. This ignoring what the user wants while hiking prices betting that people will accept anything is rooted in something that is so present in capitalism and so many other aspects of life, like even dating, which is people trying to maximize their gains so hard that they end up with less than average results. There's a video by Veritasium on Youtube titled the expert myth where he talks about an experiment with rats and humans. Rats and humans were placed in front of 2 buttons that lit up. They had to guess which button would light up by pressing it beforehand. If they guessed correctly, they received a treat. If they guessed incorrectly, a mild shock. One button lit up 80% of the time but other than lighting up more than the other, the order in which they lit up was completely random. The rats quickly realized there was no pattern and only pressed the button that lit up more. Humans on the other hand, even though it was completely random and had no recgonizable pattern, still kept trying to identify a pattern to maximize their gains and ended up with less correct guesses than the rats. People are greedy and never satisfied, they will keep pushing and squeezing to maximize their gains to their own detriment.
>>509009780But money is not something you consume, you exchange it for the things you consume. And printing money doesn't create wealth.
