This is why crit racing in america is sorta popular. Closed circuits, means less need for large support. Plus, it is more spectator friendly, as the peloton makes several passing by them. That said, and this pisses me off, Cyclocross in america is dead. It should be one of the top winter sports here, but sadly most of the UCI races are long gone.
