I will answer this whole thread with simplicity, and it will annoy everyone including the OP.

1. Russia treats the war in Ukraine as an existential war (meaning, a fight for survival). This view is shared not just by Putin, but by the entire Russian government, and by the soldiers fighting on the ground. This is fact.

2. The Russian authorities, via its negotiating delegation have already said the following: they see the conflict to be similar to the 21-years war against Sweden, where Russia fought to establish a foothold in Europe. Sweden eventually lost, and Russia solidified itself as an empire. The current conflict in Ukraine is viewed as a battle for geopolitical balance in Europe, even if the fighting is happening in Ukraine. This viewed is shared not only by Russia, but also by Europe itself - given as for EU the defeat of Ukraine is also unacceptable. The EU will lose geopolitical supremacy on the continent if this happens.

Finally:
3. Russia (and Russians) will continue fighting this war for generations if necessary, this again has been stated by members of the Russian government. Be it for 5 years, 20 years, or even 100 years. This conflict is existential for both Russia and EU, but it wasn't Russia who decided to turn Ukraine into a continental point of friction.

Swedish pro-Ukrainian here who's read a lot of pro-war Russian posters and think I can give a very fair broad take:

Obviously it's not going perfectly. Some will cope that actual wars are much harder than what people normally think, others that Russia always needs to ramp up. Both of these are fairly sure Russia will still win in the end. Russia has always been a bit scuffed but they pride themselves in that. They will see all the failures and just take it as them having the unique grit to sit through it and win.

Yes, many have died but it's not people who have been forced in a draft unlike Ukraine. Russia has a large pool of poor people who live outside the westernized areas so most regular Russian's aren't affected. So even if Russian losses are big the Ukrainian one is also up there and Russia knows it has a bigger pool of men to throw in.

All that considered I think they all also think they'd be worse off if Russia loses or Putin dies. Thinking otherwise and expressing it is also dangerous so why do it? There's a lot of trauma left from the shock therapy economic reforms when the west stood back and laughed as Russia got butt raped by oligarchs by following the Washington recommended reforms. I think this makes Russians think there's no comfortable norm to return to. It's them vs the west and only strength will help them stay over the surface.

It's a costly war yeah but despite all the propaganda and bullshit i still remember and understand the actual goals of the war.
And while Kiev would make this go faster it has not been a goal apart from some early optimism for as far as i have seen.
No the war goals for Russia (in my own words) are solidified control of Crimea and Luhansk+Donetsk, weakening Ukraine and keeping it out of NATO.

While i have not looked at the map recently the past few years have consisted of Russia absolutely dominating on the territorial wargoals, not only linking up Crimea via a bridge but creating a rather broad landbridge as well.
Donetsk and Luhansk have been primarily under Russian control for the most as well, i don't know if they have been fully conquered yet or not but with control exceeding 70% for years now i'd say it's pretty clear who is winning that one.

Then there's the goal of "No Ukraine in NATO" which the sheer act of being at war prevents, so pretty obviously that goes to Russia unless they give in on that part during peace negotiations.

Finally there is the (relative) weakening of Ukraine which is probably the most debatable as both sides suffer rather a lot.

Also it should be noted that the "3 days" meme has been an invention of British intelligence from the start so it's usually less wise to reference it than you might think, in crowds who do could need convincing anyway.

But to summarise: Russia pretty obviously has the upper hand but clearly did not expect the longevity of Ukrainian resistance, i do not think time is on Ukraine's side but you never know; i can't peek into Russia's coffers and hearts.
