Although US has the world’s largest consumer market, but its trade volume is smaller relative to its GDP because it relies less on imports for production. But China is the opposite. Instead, China must procure many essential goods through trade. The map actually shows that China’s domestic market is relatively small, and unlike the US, it relies heavily on trade to obtain the goods it needs.
Between 2000 and 2020, China’s economy grew rapidly, especially its manufacturing and infrastructure sectors.
What's important is, High Trade Volume Reflects Industrial Supply Chains, Not Just Domestic Consumption. (more oil, minerals, machinery, and electronics etc)
In short, That map doesn't just show China as a major trade and economic power, but paradoxically reveals that China cannot survive without relying heavily on trade.
