Was Aleister Crowley really capable of black magic?
Or is all of this occult stuff just fantasy?

It might work for fame. Crowley was famous and so too was Jimmy Paige of Led Zeppelin who famously bought Crowley's manor. George Thorogood, Robert Johnson, and Jimmy Hendrix also allegedly "sold their soul to the devil" for fame, which led to their tragic early deaths.

depends on how you define magic. was he literally summoning the physical bodies of demons? probably not. was he charismatic and charming to an otherworldly degree for a someone who was supposedly a sickly private school boy with an isolated and lonely life of no companionship until he went to egypt and read some spooky books? yes. i personally would describe that kind of complete 180 transformation of personality and skills overnight magic but thats just me.

Crowleysplaining was always the real magic trick here. The tabloids ate it up, christening him “The Wickedest Man Alive” – pure engagement bait centuries before Twitter trolls weaponized bad takes. Behind the goat sacrifices and bisexual orgies (his version of shock YouTube pranks) lay the depressing truth: he died broke and half-forgotten. The Beast 666? More like mid-tier occult content creator chasing clout through controversy.

All the faux-Egyptian posing is the most revealing thing. A great deal of it stems from Napoleon's invasion of Egypt at the start of the 19th century. To give it a veneer of legitimacy he brought scientists along with him to document the ruins and art - and they did a spectacular job producing really remarkable books that showcased it all (and to be fair the ancient Egyptians had some legit art and architecture). But it became a meme for the rest of the century (and to some degree remains so today). Dressing up in faux-pharaonic gear and muttering about the wisdom of the mysterious gods of Egypt was a shortcut to creating the impression of Deep Thoughts for a long time. This was picked up by every occult influencer at the time but it looks pretty silly by current year standards.

What would you say he is? is he mostly larper then with a little tricks up his sleeve or did he dabble into other areas than shaman? apparently he summoned a demon who he couldn't get rid of, that haunted his house out in scotland or wherever countryside. his friend and groundskeeper lived there, terrorized by the blasted thing throughout his time there.

There are two related streams here. Church of the SubGenius and the various Illuminatus!-derived media (in particular Discordianism). Just be aware that these are rabbit holes you can go down, but they are all extinct grandpa memes at this point, sans the occasional latter-day kid discovering them for the first time. That they are both examples of the many streams of culture-destructive media from the time goes without saying and you'll find the usual suspects somewhere in the chain.

A lot of the tabloid stuff was simply to make great cover. He was a spy for the crown. This isn't disputed, just downplayed. I'm not saying he didn't practice magic, quite a lot, but the public sensationalism served a larger purpose: it allowed him access to all sorts of elite inner circles in many different countries.

He died broke because that's the logical outcome of letting yourself be used by higher powers that don't care about human life the way we do. Those powers might be governments, companies, spirits or some combination...it doesn't matter. He burned through his inheritance and lived as a conduit/servant for larger forces. That's all he wanted to do apparently because he could've easily bought some orphan and widow stocks or whatever people with money did back then to plan for retirement. He just chose not to.

occultists know some shit about this world, it's just that they almost exclusively misinterpret the mystical experiences they are receiving and run off to invent some kooky religion on account of it.

Crowley, LaVey, Blavatsky, all of them talented in their own regard yet they all succumbed to the ego which they preached so often against.

>is he mostly larper then with a little tricks up his sleeve or did he dabble into other areas than shaman?
He didn't "dabble" the only ones that succeed at this stuff do it 247 he just wasn't as good as he thought he was none of them really were it's not his fault it's let's call it the "genetics" he was born with. In today's age with all the mixing (from various people's) and experience people can get and also drugs to hasten the process it's like comparing night and day. Also subnote he didn't realize that there were more powerful magicians and that what he did wasn't really that big of a deal. Most of his time was spent brainwashing himself with Egyptian-kabbalistic correspondences getting drunk and doing magical orgies. But I digress.

He didn't really repent and it was the last couple years he was alive. He lamented for having done the rituals that ended up summoning things because it brought great torment to the people around him, the areas they did them in, the people around those areas and himself personally.
There's various memoirs about this out there but it's been a long time since I read about him.
To paraphrase what I remember he was upset about soul contracts he didn't know were soul contracts and he thought it was kind of a meme doing ancient cabalist rituals in his study to measure what does and doesn't work.
Once he found out that you can't just move and the bad stuff goes away as well as the mental and spiritual drain he was sad that he played with powers outside of typical mortal control.
In a sense he was just kind of a puppet with a curiosity of esoteric morbid stuff and was bread crumbed into doing these things so other people could see what would happen so they didn't have to suffer the same way he did.
The last couple years of his life he spent a lot of time meditating away from the public but when he did go out spent most of his time around people warning them not to bind themselves to things that will consume them.
