I was looking for volunteer opportunities in the early part of COVID and joined pretty much any local group that was doing mutual aid, including the DSA, and I worked with them for maybe 3 months, and i honestly think they’re some kind of deradicalization op meant to catch disgruntled college lefties. They never really did anything of value, the meetings accomplished nothing, we spent forever talking about problems that literally didn’t exist over clear issues that were impacting the community and it was a colossal waste of time and money trying to work with them. I don’t know what I was expecting but it was very evident right away that most of the people in the group were looking for a bullet point on a resume to get some non profit job in dc or something.

Social democracy is an oxymoron, democracy depends on free speech and free speech depends on property rights. If the government owns the trees and the paper mills and the radio antennae and the meeting halls then there is no free speech and there is no democracy.

i was a card-carrying, dues-paying member of DSA for several years, holding several leadership/administrative positions in my chapter, and it was the faggiest Goddamned thing you can imagine. bunch of college kids and professors who wouldn't know how to talk to a poor or non-white person if they came up and pissed on their foot.

Never said it was specific to the DSA, but OP didn’t ask about any other groups.

Pretty much all of them are trash, the only partially legitimate lefty group that I’m aware of is the socialist rifle association (SRA) since they at least understand the concept of “under no pretext”. I ended up just making my own group and headhunting the few decent people I met while trying to network in the charity space, and we were able to pull off more stuff in less time with fewer meetings/people.

Lol, nearly the same exact thing happened to me. Most of the members were private school college kids, mostly white, which didn't bother me, but they wanted to do engagement/outreach and canvassing in the poorer communities in town, which were predominantly poor blacks, greeks, asians, latinos, etc. I pointed out that the optics of a bunch of snobby yuppie kids going door to door to ask poor people to go out of their way to register vote for a guy they didn't give a shit about, during an economic crisis/pandemic, without asking if they need help or assistance first, was probably not going to work well. Then I asked them why do none of the people from the communities they "serve" see any value in joining the group and they were all silent.

Needless to say, it didn't matter because they never did anything anyway so recruiting more people to do nothing would've just been a waste of time anyway.
