No, that German anon is correct. That kind of idealized American suburbia lifestyle was only accessible by a relatively small subset of the population, specifically upper middle class people with good, white collar professional jobs. It is just massively overrepresented in media and pop culture.
The rest of the population didn't live like that, even during the peak of the post WWII boom. Most people still either lived in cramped apartments in cities and worked manual labor factory jobs or slightly better clerical jobs.
