Occasional female leaders? Were not uncommon. It has been relatively common to have female leaders as queens or empresses in many societies. The idea that women have never had power is complete nonsense.
However a female leader is not the same as a matriarchal society. These tend to be extremely rare. In fact I can't think of any that were actually matriarchal.
There have been more egalitarian societies and more patriarchal societies, but again, egalitarian, even so tends to have been run by men rather than women. Though women often held high status positions, owned wealth and commanded social respect.
The problem for all matriarchal societies is that men simply leave for better pastures, causing the society to collapse.
