Gen X was the last generation where it was somewhat common. And i think only in the south was that the case. It seems it wasn’t so in other parts of the country. I think I may have had one or two paddling in school. It was actually nothing compared to a real spanking. But in my age, it was fairly common. Every school I went to had corporal punishment. But it really wasn’t as common as people think. When it did happen, it was all the gossip. lol. It was more psychological than anything else. Like, the teachers would drill holes in them and then the kids would talk about how it was done for air resistance. And I have to say, there was a strong fear factor associated with it. You not only got a paddling. Then you had to get a note signed saying you got a paddling. Which meant you got another whipping after the school whipping. I’m not sure which is better. I think it’s an important threat to have in your parenting tool kit (sometimes kids will not hear reason), but should be rarely used. The threat is the most effective part of it.
But again, it’s not something I have firm opinions on. It’s just that the way it’s done in white families cannot be characterized as violent in the way you’re describing.

It usually is the small things. That's part of what makes it so damaging to a developing child. They learn that adults are retarded and unstable, and this shapes their view of other people in general as they grow up. Most people who were abused end up not trusting anyone on a more than surface level, which makes forming healthy friendships and relationships nearly impossible. If it was a matter of being spanked for trying to burn down a house or something, it wouldn't have that effect.

All of my uncles experienced the belt in school, were scolded, and raised strictly - grew up drug dealing with some being junkies. My brothers probably had it worse - my mum would force them to stand and then throw coat hangers at them until they bled several times after the smallest of things. I remember one time she did it and when my brother filled up the bath it was just all red. They are not well mentally now and are in and out of prison.

Me and my sister got it lucky. I don't know if its because attitude's changed, but we only got grounded and shit. We both graduated uni and doing pretty well financially. I believe I am somewhat autisitic and a loner which Is the only reason I come here.

Like I said, I’m not entirely sure how I feel about it. I think the jury is still out. I think, millennials being the first generation where it was uncommon is not a good indication and they represent a poor argument against corporeal punishment; the attributes noted by an anon above about zoomies and their fairly confident disposition, they do seem fairly well adjusted in some ways and most impressively, they seem to near universally eschew booze — that is both an unambiguous good and an indication that they are somewhat internally stable.
