It's simple, in the past a large family was economically beneficial because most people worked for themselves, populations were smaller and more dispersed, and therefore they needed to create their own labor force. This is the only reason having children was a religious "commandment". In modern society they are just a net negative. The sexual instinct is innate, which of course leads to children when there is no birth control, but there isn't actually a strong biological instinct to procreate except in older women. That might seem contradictory but just think about your teenage self, you wanted to fuck but you definitely weren't thinking "I want to have children" too.
