We had one of these in a pot ash mine but it was just a chain with pegs to hold and stand on. Yes, if you didn't get off you were falling to your death. The safety absolutely hated the thing and did everything to disuade people from using it but the owners wouldn't replace or shut it down.

Also none of the elevators had safety sensors so if you held our your arm to stop the door for someone it would just crush you. I still get a cold sweat any time someone holds an elevator door open.

I used to use one of these quite regularly. They're really slow but if you're travelling a low number of floors its less of a wait than using the lift. It was really easy to use one person per carriage but got a bit cumbersome when there was two.
They were typically in university buildings but they're more common in germanic countries.

One of the biggest fears of old-school lifts was the cable snapping and you falling to your death. This design is a continuous system where such a problem can't really happen (too many cables for the whole chain to fail simultaneously.)

I used to work in an Aussie nursing home with 4 floors and an elevator. The most disabled old folks are kept on the ground floor and the elevator is separated from their area. The most capable residents are on the third floor. Both third and second floor have a nurses office right next to the elevator to prevent misuse. All old folks getting on or off were assisted.

Gotta say, nursing home job, best job I ever had. Easy as fuck and mostly comfy light job.

How fucking shit is America? The elevators once broke here during a shortish blackout in the rain season, and the condo security guards all ran straight to elevator first fucking thing when the building lost power. They opened the doors and were inside to check the cabin for anyone using it within 2 mins of the blackout and had fixed it and had it up and running again within minutes when power was restored. And these were all native Thai people doing this. I was impressed watching them solve this issue so fast and so effectively. Had a whole team outside working on power boxes and junction boxes and shit all real fast.

I am high right now. The security guards opened the doors, then got the sites top tech guy. I don't know what to call the role. He's not a security guard but like a maintenance tech guy who practically lives here, in fact I think he does. I see him all the time. One of them went straight for him and called him out, while the others ran to open the doors and check the cabins to make sure no one was stuck in them. Then the main head maintenance guy was outside at some junction box and called a crew of electricians and mechanics to fix it all. I don't think the elevator had any major damage, it was just something short circuited when the power went out.

Still, the whole response and speed of recovery, as well as watching the security guys yank the doors open and go in to check the cabin for occupant was impressive.

most places don't do that. anyway the rules are probably different in thailand, but in the united states you have to have gone through an apprenticeship for five years, and you have to be in the union
