The first time it really was, was in the 1500s when European court girls started importing some sort of shellfish wax the Brazilian natives were using. Men of the time said it was stupid, but women insisted until being waxed was status quo, in which women once again rebelled and demanded men not expect them to shave because it was "ungodly."
I could go on, for a research paper I stumbled upon this shit and it was sorta interesting (albeit worthless for my paper). But since AT LEAST the 1500s (probably further back) this has just been a cycle of style that women largely rebel against the status quo... even when they establish the status quo. For all the bush in the 80s, I'm sure if you ask your farmgirl grandma, she'd tell you she had to shave in secret because it was considered faux pas whenever she grew up.
Also idk why you guys glorify bush. If you've had your face near one, you'd change your tune as hair absorbs odor; it's a sweat/goo/piss coat.
