Most people don't know this but the right is IF you cant afford one, it's not automatic. You have to fill out paperwork on your income so they can screen you and the court decides if you can reasonably afford one or not. I actually didn't qualify despite being broke. Represented myself and got everything dismissed. Public defenders are honestly worse than having no lawyer at all, they are buddies with the prosecutor/DA and basically just work to convince their clients to take the shitty plea bargains. I watched many retards take absolutely awful plea bargains that would permanently remove any ability for them to hold a decent job in the future. It didn't go to trial, and I didn't follow any tutorials. But research your State laws, research your county, research the judges (conservative/liberal), research any alternative correction programs your county might have. Also have an understanding of what can be reasonably proven in court if it DID go to trial, so you know how much leverage they really have and how much is a bluff. I had three DV charges, one of them a felony. i refused all plea bargains the ADA offered and demanded a special deferred adjudication program I knew the county had. The ADA refused that for several hearings, kept offering shitty plea bargains where i would have to plead guilty to a DV charge and have years of probation, and actually even tacked on new charges to intimidate me. I stayed firm, told her either give me the deferral program OR I would take it to trial. She caved at the fourth hearing. End result was 12 months unsupervised probation, all charges dismissed. Then I filed motions to seal and got court + arrest records sealed. Still have my gun rights, still have a clean background check.
