My company is forcing us to use Copilot. It's shit unless you use it for documenting your code. That's about the only thing it is good at doing. It can handle minor coding tasks, but you have to give it specific instructions and still check its work. It's like a pajeet on steroids.

Am a software dev. Ai is good for some use cases like explaining code snippets you don’t onderstand, or text transformation (where you would have had to use a python script to retrieve info from a blob of text). But it falls flat instantly for code generation in an existing code base. It sucks really hard. All my colleagues and me uninstalled the paid Copilot extensions from our IDEs because it was literally slowing us down more than helping.

Btw, MS has been using AI for a while to fix bugs in some of their opensource projects and it’s a total disaster. It’s producing boatloads of shitcode which expensive MS engineers have to review manually. There are point and laugh threads on reddit where people laugh at the trashy AI pull requests and the despair of the MS devs.

AI ruined management further, they seem it as a tool to make their useless job easier but they think they should keep sucking up resources. Management where I work have almost no idea what we do on the floor and see everything as quarterly numbers, because of AI they don't even write their own emails and when we asked for suppliers they send us useless AI lists of companies that don't even make the specialized parts we need, then that puts the burden on the engineers to go above and beyond to get these parts and waste time doing their job. AI as it is has general purpose uses, but for any technical or very specific things it's almost useless, and it getting things wrong is even more of a problem when management has no idea what we do making it detrimental, but they are obsessed with AI but they don't have any kind of knowledge if their own to discern if it's giving them correct or useless information. It feels like it has become more of a God for them.

finetuning only goes so far until you get emergent behavior and artifacts (in fact engineers refuse to call them "emergent" now to cope). The issue is tail events, which is why you will never get unsupervised and un-geofenced self-drive. The very word having "tune" in it implies you are not programming or engineering, you're adjusting the data fed to the system and the output parameters, not the system itself. Like you tune a violin, you don't change its shape or material to change the sound. Only difference is, the current violin was carefully engineered to what it is today to perform its required task perfectly, meanwhile with AI we're stuck with tuning and incremental upgrading, which means increasing tail events and artifacts in a non-linear fashion. The best progress right now is improving its model abstraction, but it's side-stepping the issue. Increasing capabilities of a system you can't engineer and therefore align to your goals is gonna be extremely fun in the near future.

User interface evolution will stagnate at the worst time in human history in regards to UX design. Thats the only outcome of this. In 6-8 months companies that are hell bent on everyone using AI is either disrupted, bankrupt or in a re-hireing process.
