the problem being that women are only really attracted to men outside of their league.
he HAS to be significantly above her own standing, because what makes him attractive is the opportunity to improve her own standing (because that's what she actually cares about - not the guy but the benefit she gets from him, because the only one she loves is herself).
however, such guys will understandably not marry them. and for the few exceptions where they do, the problem just eventually kicks in again anyway because now that she leeched his status to elevate her own, she is on the same rung as him, which makes him unattractive again because he no longer provides that benefit (in her mind), she needs someone who is above him now.

add to that that women are incapable of feeling gratitude for past favors and only care about the current benefit they draw from a continued relationship and you'll understand why even gigachads get divorced, and why past cultures simply did not allow women to have any say in this at all.
