No they weren't. If you wind generations back they double in size (2 parents, 4 grandparents, etc.) even though each generation was smaller than the one after it (except boomers). You quickly reach a point where you have more ancestors in place X and year Y than there were people living there and then)m. From this you can deduce that you are related to all of those people. If you were a native Briton for example you would be more closely related to Henry VIII than the Royal Family.
