I think you're right, but the main divide in the American government was put on full display over the Iran thing. Despite what people say, and he is a retard, Trump gave the Iranians a lot of latitude to strike back without the Americans going ham on them. On Taiwan, I think the window of maximum danger is about now. This is the last optimal time for China to try and take Taiwan before the inevitable demographic collapse comes in the 2030's. Basically, it's now or never. Xi knows this.

Another problem is the Chinese have no idea how to soak up consumption and move away from exports. The trade war has harmed their industry, but flooding other markets with goods will alienate those countries from them. Like America, it probably seems to the Chinese leadership that everything is closing in - the window of opportunity will be lost.
