I'll disclose first hand knowledge of M-16's after the Vietnam war as I had a family member who served in Vietnam and possessed an M-16.
The M-16 was a government issued weapon to members of the military.
At the end of the war when troops were being pulled out alot of M-16's disappeared into the market but were still considered property of the United States government and not the property of soldiers. If you had an M-16 after the war you could have been in serious trouble.
Most people, usually soldiers, kept M-16's under wraps the same as a war souvenir.
After enough M-16's made their way into the public sphere the federal government required special licenses and permits to own an M-16. Because almost all of those Vietnam era weapons were fully automatic they had to be converted to semi-automatic to make them legal.

Did everyone forget that a Battle Rifle is also a proper military term, and a Battle Rifle is distinct yet similar to an Assault Rifle.

M14 is a Battle Rifle, as is the FAL, G3, the Gewher 43 and M1 Garand, SVT-40 and SKS 45 and I'd arguably add the FG42 as well. Battle Rifles are basically full powered rifle rounds in semi auto but sometimes full full auto capability via fire select. Battle Rifles have sub categories like Paratrooper Rifles, Designated Marksman's Rifles etc.

Assault Rifles have an intermediate cartridge, that it's as fat as a battle rifle round, but not as long, it's shortened more like a pistol round, but still much bigger than a pistol round. Assault Rifles also have semi auto and full auto, but prioritize full auto capability. Assault Rifles are things like StG 44, AK-47, AKM, M16, M4, G36, L85, Steyr AUG and such.
