End of the day it's all personal preference anon but unless you're using heirloom or beef heart tomatoes most 'round tomatoes' are watery and have little flavor apart from the acidity. Sugar helps bring out the flavor. Honey works well too. I've found that the small (like bite sized) tomatoes are really nice for sauces though once in a while
