I can't really blame this guy. I'm surprised he even gets fired after 2 months. I have seen so much shit in my field. People are generally legitimate just dumb. The whole company seems designed to waste everybody's time as much as possible. Management and HR are insanely incompetent. Nobody is in charge and it's all just a sad game of burning money and leeching off of a system that was probably build 30-50 years ago by real engineers with real managers. I don't really know where we went wrong. It's probably many small factors and has to do with education and degrees over actual skill and just general lack of common sense. Even with some degree of competent vetting, Chatgpt can generate fairly accurate code samples but complex programs require significant human review. Some remote interviewers will also require that the candidate share their screen with task manager open to see if they have AI running in the background. Even if they run it in browser, they can see if a particular window is using an obscene amount of memory and flag it as suspect. Still ways around it (phone or laptop under the table), but it's like an arms race these days.
