They're basically giving them away?
>90% off, please...I beg you...play them
Wtf, I thought they were trying to make money? I'm beginning to think that the purpose of video games is to keep you from doing anything useful or fulfilling with your life.

After a certain point, very few people are going to buy a video game unless it is discounted. It doesnt take any money to make these licenses up, so they might as well make some amount of money

Honestly I've been a gamer for as long as I can remember. I was 3 years old playing Tony Hawk on the PS1, that or Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast was my first ever vidya.

Fast forward to now, I'll be 23 in two days and gaming is nowhere near as engaging or captivating as it used to be. It seems my girlfriend is more into it these days than me. She can sit there for hours playing hogwarts legacy and I'll just get super stoned and fall asleep.

Things like depression, getting older, the massive decrease in the quality of both games themselves and the games industry as a whole has all but killed one of my OG hobbies and it fucking sucks. Don't get me wrong, I still game, it just does not provide the same dopamine hit at all and is really just a time filling exercise rather than a choice in activity now.

They're selling you a copy, one that's no longer selling. It costs them nearly nothing to produce and distribute another copy, so they'll drop the price to bring in more revenue through more sales that otherwise wouldn't happen.

No the fuck they weren't. 1st party playstation games in the mid late 90s were $50 and that price was a common reason for buying a playstation over an n64 as nintendo's first party carts were priced $60 and up depending on the title and time of year. Smash at the christmas immediately after release went for upwards of $100 in some parts of the US. Videogames have been immune to inflation for decades now. It's only the consoles and accessories that have increased in price over time but even they haven't increased substantially beyond the baseline rate of inflation.

And don't get me started on computer hardware.

he bought it because game review magazines said it was 10/10, but its obviously shit, even back then. he has told the story of how he got ripped off multiple times and started pirating software as a result, which he turned into a side hustle up until the mass democratization of the internet.

On Steam, when you "buy" a game, you are actually purchasing a license to use the game, not the game itself. This means you don't own the game in the traditional sense and Steam retains the right to revoke your access to it under certain conditions, as outlined in their terms of service.

>Have multiple computers and want to install the same game.
you cant with the same steam account.

That does suck but its all relative. It's a cope but at the same time I have old video games collecting dust in my house that I havent touched in 20 years. Same with dvds and shit. It just takes up space. I dont even have a desire to own the media anymore. It actually seems kind of gay to want to collect it now days. Its all time wasting junk. If I put in my hours in a game or watching a movie for a price I'm ok with not owning it forevever. At a certain point you need to move on anyway.

Not more than 2 weeks i think it was

>Have multiple computers and want to install the same game.
You need a steam account. You don't own shit.

I remember the days when you go to a shop a buy a game, then it was yours forever. It all changed when Half-Life 2 came out.

most games make their money within the first month
most of these games are actually pretty old so they're just squeezing any sale they can get

I don't have a family and I'm now programming a video game
If I was crippled I'd probably get around to publishing it
If you die, that's when people actually buy it

GOG lets you download the offline installers and you can copy them as much as you want.

A much better company but they dont have nearly as many games as steam has and their linux support is shit.

Software has no distribution cost anymore. You just optimize the expected maximum revenue, which is at a very low price for old and shitty games.

back in the day when you wanted a cheap game you'd just buy it used, devs didn't see a dime of that transaction
now they can have something on the shelf indefinitely. even if its only pennies its still a sale

They are a good way to relax and engage my brain in a way that keeps it active in specific ways, depending on the types of game, between doing other things. Some people are just victims of life and everything that happens to them is something elses fault, it's drugs fault or video games fault etc. that they are losers, everything is just a coping mechanism for why they can't have exactly what they want when they have a million other things.
