I think 99% of the things in my house are still from when Aus use to manufacture shit.

Radio, fridge, freezer, washing machine, toaster, kettle, microwave, car etc

Had to have the electric motor on the washing machine re-wound, fridge re-gassed and new seals, but other than that this shit just keeps chugging along and it's outlived all the stuff my parents replaced it with when they gave it to me kek

I’ve had this clock since stumbling upon it 17 years ago for $1 in a thrift store. I enjoy hearing the light ticking of its gears throughout the night; I have a 50’s W. Germany Semca portable winding clock that is nice and loud, occasionally I use it when traveling or wanting to hear a louder rhythmic click.

The old GE keeps damn near perfect time, I’ve never had to set it between daylight savings time changes. And it’s alarm is LOUD.

You should use it. Being able to actually hear the mechanisms working should be advertised as a feature for any household items sold for the future.
Clocks and watches are the easiest things to go for when looking for this. It's not a watch from an earlier decade, but I wear an automatic watch for the same reason.

Old alarm clocks are great. When it comes to alarms being less convenient to change is good. Fins one where setting the time is as unintutive and annoying as possible ans the only time your likely be fiddling with your times on that bitch is twice a year if it doesn't have a switch for daylight savings. It's not going to die overnight because you crashed out forgetting to plug your phone in, it's probably got battery backups if you lose power, and it's way louder so you can set it well out of reach where even to hit snooze you've got to drag your bones out of bed. It's a simple little thing but if your undisciplined and unorganized using an old alarm instead of your phone can legitimately help you get your shit together and improve your life. Old refrigerators and freezers are great too. Elegent simplicity there.

These are so fucking satisfying to use, very tactile. Speaking of my grandmother still has a rotary phone with a dedicated little bench/seat arrangement kind like pic related.

Rotary phone was peak phone, you still had the ability to ring people on the other side of the country, but you weren't beholden to it or carrying it around in your pocket 24/7 and you actually had to learn peoples numbers.

Checked analog phones tend to sound very warm and raw whereas digital stuff is heavily processed and filtered. It's the same when you're even just recording your voice. Record it onto something analog vs record it with your phone and the difference is insane.

Man I had an OP style alarm clock for the first 30+something years of my life and I absolutely hated it, always had terrible sleep especially if I woke up during the early morning and glanced at the time, it would induce some kind of anxiety about having to get up.
A forest fire burned down my neighborhood and I had to go without a clock for a while and I slept better and found I always just woke up naturally between 6 and 6:30 am.
Getting good sleep changed my whole life health-wise.
TLDR: Fuck alarm clocks they are unnatural

I have my Apple IIc pictured above, an IBM Thinkpad 600E(PII originally, upgraded to PIII, 98SE SP3, for Half-Life/Descent/Unreal era gaming) which comes in handy often nowadays due to its built in serial port, an HP Vectra PII server I use as a firewall, and a DECmate III+ that I picked up due to its having a PDP 8e on a chip, full compatibility.

Reading about their Rolm dataphone network, wonder if it’s still operating? As of 2010:
The CBX itself is installed on the first floor of Low Library, in the center of campus. It consists of 10 CBX and 10 PhoneMail "nodes", plus disks, tapes, terminals, etc, and the Main Distribution Frame (MDF), where all 50,000 wire pairs from the Morningside Rolm telephone jacks terminate. It is administered by the Office of Communications Services (OCS), which is part of Administrative Information Services (AIS), which formerly, together with what is now Academic Information Systems (AcIS), formed the Columbia Computer Center. [NOTE: By 2010 all these organizations and acronyms are ancient history, in the neverending rounds of reorganization and rebranding, but the equipment itself is still where it was and still operational
