The previous music era of hair metal bands were fizzling out and music labels needed a new cow to milk. They've found this band that had a song and a video. MTV kept playing it and music labels raked in lots of money.
They were mostly popular with people who were not into rock before that and they were burning out quickly. Nobody gave a shit about their third album.

I shouldn't say Nirvana flat out sucked. I somewhat like their sound and if all you knew was lame metal bands and AOR rock bullshit, they were refreshing at least. Kurt never wanted to be as famous as he was. Dave always did, as evidenced by his incredibly tame and safe corporate "rock" output. Anyway, not the best of the early 90s bands in my opinion but not the worst. Of the Seattle bands, they are worse than Soundgarden and AIC. The music coming out of Chicago was more interesting at the time, same goes for Minneapolis bands of the era. In the end, Nirvana killed pop metal and Courtney killed Kurt.
