>>509478039 (OP)>“Every miserable fool who has nothing at all of which he can be proud, adopts as a last resource pride in the nation to which he belongs; he is ready and happy to defend all its faults and follies tooth and nail, thus reimbursing himself for his own inferiority.”>― Arthur SchopenhauerThis happens because the "miserable fool", has to have something to be proud of, something to hold onto, to make his suffering "worth it", something to be satisfied with. In contemporary times, people find pride in their nationality, the proficiency of a surrogate activity, like guitar, Golf, weightlifting, distance running, etc. and/or a possession they own, a truck, watch collection, boat, motorcycle, wardrobe, IKEA furniture, etc.
Before industrial society, people found pride in fulfilling the power process in a natural way. Growing own food, raising children, hunting, crafting, and so forth. Industrial society provides the physiological needs, causing people to cope, to find something else to satisfy them, to make themselves proud.
