The word nation roughly means 'place of origin' yet the concept expands past locality, for instance someone in Louisiana and New Hampshire are both 'American' or say you live in NYC you're also part of the same state as someone who lives in Albany. In the olden days it was more common to be part of an empire which contained many different groups of people or a Kingdom. The idea of drawing the lines on the map based around ethnic origin of the people within the area wasn't the priority.

Before industrial society, people found pride in fulfilling the power process in a natural way. Growing own food, raising children, hunting, crafting, and so forth. Industrial society provides the physiological needs, causing people to cope, to find something else to satisfy them, to make themselves proud.
