If the ideology is created to lull you into a sense of safety in the dream of a society that is impossible, but sounds nice, so that you position yourself for conquer in your adherence, why would you make a distinction between the ideology and the reality?
Being willingly "communist" just means that you've subscribed to a religion as described by someone else. The creators of communism slaughtered millions in order to gain control, and they were not benevolent leaders. You mention regimes, but the regimes are inevitable. A working-class utopia with no one on top isn't possible. Human psychology won't allow for that unless the majority of the population suddenly becomes critical thinkers. People want a leader to tell them what to do. I fought the pimp/whore scenario for years, but the base population needs a pimp, or they don't know what to do. Any utopian society of any kind would require the majority of the population to be intelligent and capable of independent thought, and it just can't happen. In that absence, the communists created an "attainable" dream for those who can picture something pleasant, but only if someone else tells them they can. The basic tenets of many religions are love and peace, but the end results differ greatly for the same reasons.
