Tried to get Persian gulf access to export oil. The war between Iraq and Iran was over a small slip of land on the gulf. The war with Kuwait was the same thing.
Iraq was forced to pipe oil through Turkey and subject to very high piping fees. US sided with their ally Turkey . They armed Iran to fight Iraq and retook Kuwait from Iraq.
