Its basically the path this country is on, if you want to see what the US look like in 20-25 years then Brazil is it. A regional power that alternates between a stable functioning society and overwhelming poverty. We already have shanty towns and I predict in the near future they'll end up being legalized and hooked up to public services like a favela. Brazil also has a massive, robust social welfare system and large taxes placed on imports making it very difficult for business to import things while simultaneously not being great for manufacturing in spite of its poverty. Add in a disinterested elite and the racial/ethnic factionalism and you've got the US' future. Honestly, we'll probably be worse. The remaining brazilian upper class has a pretty strong siege mentality and have adapted to the reality that every other part of their society hates them and will go after them the moment an opportunity arises. White Americans haven't adopted this mentality outside of people who were on the blunt end of desegregation and industrial decline in the late 20th like anyone who lived in Philly, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, NYC or any other post industrial town with a large black population.
