Why Russia LOST in Ukraine
1. Ukraine: a state that should’ve been fixed in perpetual limbo between the Russian and Western spheres of influence (juggling between hosting a Russian military base and negotiating with the EU) is now dead set on joining Western institutions (the EU and NATO). Even if Ukraine never joins NATO or the EU, it will become ingrained into the Western security and intelligence apparatus (even more than it already is). Any bit of Ukraine that is not occupied by Russia directly at the end of this conflict is territory that is de facto NATO land.
2. 4 Oblasts: There’s this notion on /pol/ that Russia has somehow gotten all the land it wants and therefore has already won the war. This is an unusual and bizarre concept as Russia has yet to 100% capture any of the 4 oblasts after three years (and in the case of Kherson Oblast, Russia has lost ground since the start of the war). Cities and towns like Bakhmut or Avdiivka took months of grinding combat for the Russians to force the Ukrainians out of the urban area. In Bakhmut’s case, Russia is still on Bakhmut’s outskirts TWO YEARS LATER. For Russia to complete the conquest of the 4 oblasts would be more years of battles on much larger scales than Bakhmut or Avdiivka.
3. Transnistria: To further bury the notion that Russia has already won the war, one must look towards the West. Russia’s failure at the start of the SMO to conquer Odessa and Mykolaiv has left Transnistria a sitting duck. I can’t imagine anyone thinking that Russia has won this war when they’ve left Transnistria to dry. In any future conflagration between Russia and the West, Transnistria will simply get the Assad treatment and be left to fend for themselves.

4. Moldova (once fixed perpetual limbo between the Russian and Western spheres of influence) has now clearly sided with the West (inking two defense pacts with France and the EU respectively last year). Even if Moldova never joins NATO or the EU, it will join the Western security and intelligence apparatus regardless (much like Sweden and Ireland in the Cold War).
5. Uniting the West: After the Cold War and before 2014, NATO had lost its purpose without a Russian ‘boogeyman’ at their doorstep. Now, in the wake of the Ukrainian conflict, NATO has been reignited to oppose Russia. Finland and Sweden have both formally joined NATO. The EU is taking its own measures to boost their member states’ collective defense. Besides bums like the Spanish and Italians, most NATO countries have reached the old 2% goal and will strive to the reach the 5% goal in due time.
6. Nagorno-Karabakh: Russia’s contracted conflict in Ukraine only enabled Turkey and its allies (al-Sharaa and Azerbaijan) to simply walk over Russian interests. Something that pro-Russians users here have ignored (or never even heard of) is that Russia (in the aftermath of the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War) negotiated a ceasefire with Armenia and Azerbaijan, setting up Russian peacekeepers to MAINTAIN PEACE. The SINGULAR GOAL of these Russian peacekeepers was to KEEP THE PEACE. And what happened? They FAILED. Azerbaijan simply walked right in, murdered 4 Russian peacekeepers, and seized Nagorno-Karabakh. Azerbaijan broke the ceasefire that RUSSIA negotiated, killed Russian soldiers, and got away with it. It doesn’t matter if Armenia ‘betrayed’ Russia, Azerbaijan spat in Russia’s face and Putin didn’t do shit.

7. Assad: Russia spent 9 years propping up Assad and lost it all in 11 DAYS. Syria was Russia’s oldest ally and the most Russia could do was a few airstrikes that barely delayed the rebels. Now Syria’s run by a literal terrorist backed by Turkey and endorsed by the West. (The funniest part about Syria is how the other Arab countries were on the verge of recognizing Assad’s government before it all went down the drain.) The most important thing here is Russia’s credibility, how can countries like Burkina Faso or Venezuela trust Russia to back them up if Putin just let his oldest ally get overthrown?

for the effort.

Truth is, the status quo is a slow Russian victory. Russia keeps gaining ground, the west keeps being humiliated. NATO turned out to be a paper tiger, its myth of invincibility is dispelled, it's narcissistic superiority complex exposed as just that, a mere mental disability. Anyone who dares to challenge NATO wins. Even the Houthi militias defeat NATO.

The moment the US leave that war or China joins it, the slow Russian victory turns into a rather quick one. China only didn't join so far because it has a strong interest in keeping NATO and Russia tied to this war, in keeping US troops away from Taiwan and Russian troops away from the Korean demarcation line. But China also has a strong interest in not letting Russia lose, because Russia provides raw materials, metals and most importantly, security for the northern Chinese borders. China outproduces all of Europe and the US together by magnitudes of order. The west cannot possibly win.
