Every single country near Russia is buying Russian crude now. Russia suddenly decided it didn't want to play along with global price fixing of oil and started undercutting US rates just to leverage their resources for geopolitics. This is what Putin wrote his Ph.D on, it should surprise no one. It's no coincidence that there's been a significant uptick in anti-US rhetoric when the US had immensely high approval ratings back before the iron curtain fell. Allowing perestroika was the US' biggest mistake, the only thing keeping the world from Russian oil was the fact that they didn't want to sign onto the Gosplan, now they just run their government like a mafia and sell to whomever while leveraging the very same nationalist rhetoric the CIA spent years building up in Europe and Asia. The Marshall Plan caused Europe to devolve into welfare states, there's absolutely no chance they convince the public to go work in the coal mines again, so they'll keep playing around with green energy and saving face while making surreptitious deals to keep their welfare state alive. The US thought they could outlast the USSR for some reason and that they could artificially keep Europe on welfare then pull the system once the Soviets collapsed, it backfired spectacularly. They tried making a pan-arabic union to start expanding their trade network, but that too failed (see Iran-Contra). Russia has Saudi levels of oil and the infrastructure to transport it efficiently, that's all it takes to become a trade hegemon, you'd think Norway would try something like that, but they can't supply all of Europe, if they could you'd see a Scandinavian takeover of Europe as of right now they're staying far away from EU, Russian, and US politics.

The situation in the sub-continent took a grievous turn after Pakistan launched preemptive air strikes in North India on 3 December, 1971 dragging India into a full scale direct war with its neighbour

A CIA mole in Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s cabinet had leaked her plan to bomb Pakistani military capability into the Stone Age.

A livid Nixon stressed he would not allow India to break up Pakistan’s core territories in the west. He warned the Indian ambassador L.K. Jha in Washington: “If the Indians continue their military operations (against West Pakistan), we must inevitably look toward a confrontation between the USSR and the US. The Soviet Union has a treaty with India; we have one with Pakistan.”

“A broad plan of action emerged which included cutting off economic aid to India, and transfer of military equipment from other US regional allies to West Pakistan."

Soviet Navy did not take time to respond as it quickly dispatched two groups of cruisers and destroyers and a submarine armed with nuclear missiles from Vladivostok in between on 6 and 13 December of 1971. The Soviet Navy had kept a close watch on the US Seventh Fleet.

The U.S. was aware that the Soviet Navy had entered the Indian Ocean on December 5 and by December 7 was “approximately 500 nautical miles east of Ceylon (Sri Lanka).” On December 8, U.S. National Security Adviser Henry Kissinger admitted that given the Russia factor, “I must warn you, Mr. President, if our bluff is called, we’ll be in trouble... we’ll lose.” On December 11, Kissinger briefed President Richard Nixon, “16 Soviet naval units are now in the Indian Ocean area, including three space support ships. The White House had also been hoping for some sort of a Chinese move to complicate India’s military operations. On the same day, Nixon told Kissinger, “a movement of even some Chinese toward that border could scare those goddamn Indians to death.”

Looking back, we can see that Indian policymakers achieved something remarkable in managing the geopolitical contradictions. They crafted a partnership with the Soviets to offset what was a formidable U.S.-Pakistan-China front. The nuggets also reveal how seriously China and the U.S. took Indian countermeasures and Moscow’s resolve to ensure that its ally emerged victorious.
