I just bought 240lbs of rice for 300 USD from japan.

Japan's history goes back thousands of years. The USA is a country that's only a few hundred years old and has never had to struggle, having started the game with a continent's worth of thinly populated land. Japan has widely observed that the USA is currently led by selfish morons and that the short-term inconvenience is far outweighed by maintaining its dignity and strategic independence.

Not unreasonable. A big part of the problem is that farming pays so poorly in Japan that no young person has any rational economic reason to do it. I'd like to work on this there but economically it's probably a non-starter even if I had a green thumb (I don't). Their mountainous geography does not lend itself well to industrial ag plus they are justifiably fussy about what they eat.
on the plus side they can import staples like basedbeans etc from Brazil, probably at higher quality than the US product. OTOH if the US wanted to put the squeeze on Japan in some hypothetical future conflict it could starve the country with relative ease via blockade.

Just keep it cool, dry and out of sunlight and modern brown rice will last 6 months, 12 in refrigerator, 2 years in freezer. Each bag is 20 days for me so 240lbs = 15 bag or about 1 year.
