for example, the territorial size between california and arizona is way larger, and yet the dialect is virtually the same; whereas irish and scottish accents, despite being closer, are vastly different and practically incomprehensible.
my overall point is that someone from a foreign country learning english as a second language would be able to communicate more efficiently with an american rather than a brit (i’m including ireland and wales — historically british territory)

But when they try to do more regional accents like NYC/NJ or Boston or different Southern accents, it is much harder to be believable, especially for native speakers of those accents. Frequently because they overdo it. A good example is picrel. The actor playing Rick is British and has cartoonish Southern accent. The actor playing his son is actually from Atlanta and has a much less noticeable accent.
