I have a similar story. When I was 13, living abroad in the UK, this cute girl from school named Hannah had a crush on me. I also liked her back but I was inexperienced and had low self-confidence. One time we randomly met outside of school when I was hanging out in front of this movie theatre with some buddies. When she saw me, she immediately came over with a huge smile and started talking to me and I just ignored her and stepped away. She still followed me around a bit trying to get me to talk but I just pretended like I was kind of annoyed and not into her, looking away and being completely silent while my buddies akwardly laughed at the situation. She looked really disappointed and lingered for a while and then just left with her friend. Still saw her at school and she would try to flirt with me. This went on for months or a little over a year, then she just seemed to have completely lost interest and I left for another school a little while later. This was back in 2007-08 and I'm 30 now. I don't expect that this would have been a relationship that was going to last, though it could have, but I have a profound regret of missing out on experiencing young love knowing I will never be a 13 year old just starting to discover life again when feelings were much more special and I was much more naive.

I think that's why I messed up. I used to stupidly think that somehow the universe would conspire in my favor and things would just magically work out in the end.
