if its a bigger than a rat but doesnt look like a wolf, then its a pig

https://www.hs.fi/tiede/art-2000011343950.html

badger is Finnish anima and Finns originally named it "forest pig", this changed later with knowledge of biology

badger however is infact related to a wolf for real

other people have named porcupines as "spined pigs"

porcupine is related to rats

european people who went to afrika, named aadvark as "ground pig"

aadvark is distant relative of an elephant

then some europeans went to south america and discovered cabybara

they named it "waterpig" because it spend so much time in water

but turns it its yet another rat relative

It's explained in the article that it's because when explorers traveling the world found new animals they named them after what they were already familiar with. And everyone knew pigs.
Same shit with the hippopotamus, people found a big animal that likes rivers and has a head somewhat reminiscent of a horse, and thus named it river horse.

Hippos/horse means to run.
They didn't think it was a horse they named it based on phenology do you really think that the learned greeks and romans thought crocodiles were actually a type of worm because they called them rock worms,Think sandfly its not a fly but a gnat that resembles a fly.

Wow
So they first hazzarded a guess at a name then after studying the creature came up with a more precise name.
Very bizzare
