Why didn't Ireland revive the Irish language? It's strange, the british spent hundreds of years banning the irish language and beating and killing irish people for speaking it and irish people just kept speaking it up until the famine. Even in the 1870s, after the famine, the english eventually introduced irish as a subject in the national school system after the irish refused to stop speaking irish and then once Ireland got independence the irish just abandoned the irish language. Conradh na Gaeilge (organization formed to promote the irish language) tried to convince the new irish government to restore the irish language as the language of the government and society and the irish government essentially told them to fuck off. I don't get it.
The Welsh government revived the Welsh language and they are pouring loads of money into increasing the number of speakers and promoting the language.
