People care, it's just that the news cycle and social media has a short attention span. You can still see daily updates on any global affair. But you need to remember that news media is a for profit industry. They don't care about the news, they care about making money and only making money. So once people get saturated by a topic they look for a new one to latch onto for a bit until the next big story rolls around. Social media follows this trend for the same reason. This is why it's a great idea to not focus on news media and social media and instead go look up topics you want to know about and see whats up with them. You have free will, you can read about whatever you like you don't need to just follow news and social media trends. The other day I was reading about coral reef restoration efforts. The mainstream news doesn't care about it because it's not sensationalist, but people still care about it. It's also kind of like how some people think the ozone depletion crisis back in the day was fake because no one talks about it anymore. This is because the problems was largely solved, the ozone is now fixing itself and news media stopped having a scare story to push. And people being unable to think for themselves, think that because the news doesn't talk about it, it must not be real.
Please use your free will and stop letting mass media think for you.
