I thought the same thing for years. Eventually I came to the realization that I just had to nit the bullet and basically start over, from near zero savings but out of debt. Another bit of information that may help people is that a seperate credit reporting agency exists called CAIVRS. After 7.5 years of delinquency on student loan payments your credit report clears up and it rolls off, per some law that forces the loan holder to cease reporting after 7.5 years of inactivity. I experienced this, my credit score was great and I thought I was all good. Come to find out, when you apply for a mortgage the underwriter does a CAIVRS check and finds the federal loans you haven't paid regardless of it falling off of your 3 main reporting agencies and you're denied. I had been saving for a house, credit was great only to find out it wasn't like that. This fd me up and in conjunction with Trump starting to go after delinquent borrowers with garnishments I just decided to contact my loan holder and pay it off. They knocked off around 15% of the interest in exchange for a lump some payment. It sucks, I totally agree but you can't win with feds. Wage garnishment is a nightmare I've heard and can take a year to get out of even with full payment of the original loan. I'm rambling but this is just what I've done. These loans crippled me for most of my adult life until recently and it's nice to be out of debt with them. I'm nearly back to zero saving but I'm clear of these fucks now.
