>Prior to the late 1950s the teaching of mathematics relied heavily on memorization of formulas and rules for solving various types of math problems. Students then spent much of their time working through exercise sets.
Sounds like bugman thinking and learning to pass the test rather than to master the material. But it was like all things in education sabotaged by the teacher's union.
>Teachers were hurriedly—but often not adequately—retrained to teach new math to their students.
That's the polite way of saying the teacher's union fought against the new method because the union gets to decide how students are educated not the people paying for it.
>>509758839It started long before the 50s. The schooling system we have today was invented in the late 1880s. Kindergarten exists solely because the militaristic Prussians implemented it and openly admitted they did it to get the child away from the parents as soon as possible so they could be molded by the State into perfect soldiers/obedient citizens to the government authority.

>>509767454Yeah because Euclidean Geometry is all about teaching you how the math actually works, giving you comprehension. Maybe there was memorization but it was coupled with comprehension and a solid foundation of how it works, which they removed because Euclidean geometry was replaced with other stuff as the links say. Most importantly Euclidean geometry is all about logic and that's why it teaches you how to think which is transferable to other areas of life. It was the last remnant of logic in public school as I said.
>William Heard Kilpatrick, one of the most influential pedagogical figures of the early twentieth century, would have felt right at home in today’s educational culture wars. Back then, as now, the traditionalist defense of math education came from the idea that the subject created order and discipline in the minds of young students. The child who could solve a geometric proof, for example, would carry that logic and work ethic into his professional life, even if it did not entail any numbers at all. Kilpatrick, a popular reformer who was known as the “million-dollar professor,” not for his salary but for the huge tuition-paying crowds his lectures drew, dismissed that idea. Algebra and geometry, he believed, should not be widely taught in high schools because they were an “intellectual luxury,” and “harmful rather than helpful to the kind of thinking necessary for ordinary living.” Not everyone was going to need or even have the intelligence to complete an algebra course, Kilpatrick reasoned. Why bother teaching it to them?https://archive.ph/fAvxv

>>509770484What's your point? Euclidean geometry is all about logic. None of the subjects taught in public school since the removal of Euclidean geometry have any logic at all in them. They wanted to make America more competitive against the Soviet Union so they removed the last remnant of logic from public school, why is that? It's because they weren't oppressing the slave class hard enough that's why.

They removed mathematical proofs/geometric proofs from public school, which is what Euclid's geometry is all about. Why? Because it's logic, and they had been working for decades already on removing all logic from public education. Removing it from math was the final step, the project was complete, Sputnik and commies a mere false flag to justify it. It must have taken some effort to come up with a way to make slaves learn the basic math needed to be functioning slaves without teaching logic, I guess they had finally figured out a way.

>>509772801Alright. Admittedly this was a half-arsed thread I made while I was out walking using my phone. I'm still researching this myself. Some links I had at home I posted when I got back home. When I posted the thread I based it on stuff I read before I left home which talked about Sputnik etc. I'm struggling to even find what it was right now, as I have about 20 tabs open, and in some of the tabs I might have clicked away what was there. I have seen multiple sources talking about how Euclidean geometry used to be a cornerstone of math in public education, and at least I didn't learn anything at all of Euclidean geometry in 12 years of school.
