That’s simple. We are told from a young age here that the world is our oyster, this is a land where anyone can do anything if they try. We are told we are exceptional. This is the greatest country on earth. We are constantly exposed to images of elite lifestyles and hold those up as the goal of every man and woman. Then, the reality of the long work weeks for low pay, the check to check living, the constant struggle and lack of either clear social mobility, cohesive communities, and safety nets becomes apparent. Most Americans are one bad day away from losing everything they hold dear. When such an event takes place, like a divorce, a breakup, a layoff, etc many simply cannot cope. They fall into coping mechanisms and spiral downward in self destructive ways, and it's not hard to imagine suicide by cop through the means of unimaginable acts as an outcome for someone enduring the extreme stress of living in this country.

The fact is we have nothing. We are told we are the wealthiest nation, but there's nothing in anyone's price range. Everything is financed by obscene amounts of debt and interest. Any significant setbacks are likely to crush 90% of Americans. Yes, it is a violent place. Yes, there is a mental health crisis. No, there is no help available for many of us. It fucking sucks here. The best you can hope to do is live a life of quiet wage slavery and be risk averse to a point of extreme paranoia and never make any mistakes. That's it. If you live that way, you'd be fucked up too. Just getting unemployment, disability or social security benefits is a Herculean task that can take months, and when you have less than 1000.00 in your account, financial catastrophe is certain.
