So why did the U.S. freak out over Korea and then Vietnam?

Communism? Seriously?

If we're so sure communism doesn't work, why the hell did we care if anyone else tried it?

the money people pay in taxes all goes into one big communal pot.
the object of the game is to find a reason to take as much money out of the pot without getting called out by the judicial system.
for the military-industrial complex, wars are one such reason.

Coincidentally enough, this is why Israel also exists kek. They think that powerful Jews lobbied super hard and "bought their land back".
No. Its literally a springboard for interventions in that part of Asia.

Most likely because they viewed the PRC as a likely Soviet ally in case a war breaks out between them and the West. Especially in the case of the Korean war, but even after the Shino-Soviet split.

its pretty well documented, at least the official story was that people on power really beleived in the domino theory and went on to commit 2 genocides because of it.
they thought that if they loose those countries next countries will follow non stop and that wouuld make them loose the cold war

A friendly government was under attack by a communist insurgency.
USA felt it had to do something to help, especially after communists killed the US president.
After losing China and Cuba and a bunch of other countries, decision was made to make a stand in Vietnam.

Communism was still a relatively new thing in 1960, they had a sense it would cause gigadeaths based on what happened in Russia and lo and behold it happened in China during the war and then Cambodia and North Korea later on. Only reason Vietnam didn't suffer the same is because South Vietnam told them it would be a bad idea to take it too seriously.

Because boomer America was obsessed with the idea that Communists are allies, therefore contributing to USSR and Chinese expansion. A communist Korea and Vietnam is not really ideal for America as they are trade route and good manufacturers.

Surely if we left the Soviets and their ideological allies alone, they wouldn’t try to fuck with us. It’s not like overthrowing our system was one of their explicitly stated goals.

Because a failing empire can go 3 ways, it either fades quietly, reforms itself, or chimps out to offset its internal troubles with the spoils of conquest. The US and co. did not want the commies to have an extensive empire with well-defended borders should they go option 3 or even 2 and the US itself is an expansive empire ever seeking to obtain new vassals. So standard Great Power stuff, really.

You lack the basic information to understand its context. Pick up a book on 20th century Asian history and I guarantee you won't be bored.
