It wouldn't really need any new tech. These guys all navigate using Foreflight (as do many civilians, including myself when I was flying) and you can draw out as complicated of a path as you want and then just steer the plane along the GPS line. It's how pretty much all of these fancy flight path "drawings" are done these days. The design looks intricate and precise but that's because it's like 15 miles long and small variations and errors aren't visible when zoomed out far enough to see the whole thing.

Mil anon here. This was just a standard flight to test and break in some components. It can help highlight and diagnose problems as well. Funny thing is, that area he drew the dicks in is a hotspot for UFO activity for a very particular reason that I won't go in to. Nah, the government spends literal millions on these pilots and they never have enough to go around as it is, it's nearly impossible to get kicked off flight status unless you're an absolute menace who presents a genuine risk. Like I said in the last thread, probably a slap on the wrist, maybe an extra year or two for the next promotion or at worst he gets transferred to flying in Alaska or something. I also think there's a good chance it's a retirement flight though, so they can't really do anything if so.

I think most pilots barely use them the normal way these days anyway, most use iPad EFBs and sometimes link to the Garmin for more accurate GPS data etc. I'm not sure about Europe but they're also kind of a legal requirement here in the US, there's a weird loophole where pilots without an instrument rating aren't supposed to use an iPad for GPS navigation (you're allowed to use it as a replacement for paper charts, but not follow the purple line) but you're allowed to do it if the plane has a built-in GPS.

That said I never got very far before the coof fucked things up for me (only flew about 12 hours) so I've only done basic VFR stuff where I could follow highways and the coastline etc., and I was always with an instructor, so I've never even messed with the Garmins in real life except for radio frequencies.

Kind of. The iPad isn't approved as a primary navigation tool, so in theory the Garmin is your "main" GPS and the iPad is a "backup" or "supplemental" device. In reality most people do it the other way around, but if the plane doesn't have a GPS at all there's nothing onboard that's allowed to be a primary GPS device.
