In the book, heโs depicted as villainous, predatory, and gluttonous. Heโs so fat he needs anti-gravity devices to move around (which did carry over to the movie).
But predatory sex perverts and obese gluttons are commonplace now. The only way to make him off-putting to a modern audience is to make him extra gross, hence the pool of black goo.
In the original film the production staff couldnโt portray him as he was in the book because it would have been too obscene (or maybe just too unbelievable) for a 1980โs audience. Thatโs why they made him diseased and added the heart plugs.
