This has always been a psyop.
They have always believed in "Abraham's Bosom" and "Sheol" as places where the spirit goes after death.
Abraham's Bosom (or some place of comfort) being where the faithful are sent, and Sheol for all others. Sometimes the place of comfort is within Sheol.
The writings of the Maccabees, the book of Enoch, the Mishnah, corroborate this.
Then Christ died, paid for the sins of all, and brought all the faithful departed to heaven (that is, to the immediate vicinity of God).
