Are Italians White? If not, what is the historical justification for them not being White, and does that mean that the Roman Republic and Empire were not White? Allegedly, the modern Italians have the same admixture as Roman citizens, but I find this highly dubious considering all the various genetic influences on the region since the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Especially considering the colossal demographic collapse of Roma itself, falling from an estimated 1 million residents to just 23,000.

They aren't white but they're obviously not black. During Apartheid the Italian, Greek and Portuguese community here were often mistaken for "coloureds", which is mixed race here.

It was possible, but only for a city like Rome that ruled an Empire of that scope. It required constant importation of goods to sustain it, so much olive oil was brought from Spain that the discarded pottery jars formed an actual hill in Rome.
So Rome did it, not sure Constantinople did, I think the usual figure given was 650,000 people for that. I think Xi'an as the old capital of China did it. I don't know if Tenochtitlan did it. Or Siem Reap at it's height.
