"Russia" never had glorious days. Imperial Russia was a shithole, so was post-soviet Russia.
The only time in history this landmass had somewhat good times was when it was just one part of the Soviet Union.
And if you dive deeper into that rabbit hole you will see that many of the people who developed the technical miracles of the USSR were not Russians but rather Ukrainians, Belarusians and people from other parts of the USSR. Out of my ass:
