Fighters, especially interceptors, are outdated.
You can build a fighter drone that can outmaneuver any human, and build enough of them to match the Chinese manpower advantage they have.
Taiwan will never go on the offensive against China and try to reclaim it, so you just need a short range interceptor to destroy bombers and motherdroneships. A simple, low cost, unmanned hyper-maneuverable inceptor drone could be build rather stealthy and using AI could fight even without direct operator control. Allow operator override in case of problems but it can cruise stealthed up and quiet, with AI, so it can get near targets it wants to intercept.
Also hard to track the numbers of drones compared to number of fighter jets.

The Saab Gripen makes sense for Taiwan. It's affordable, versatile, very manoeuvrable and if airfields are destroyed it can easily land on small roads to be refuelled and rearmed quickly. Also the Swedes will give them more flexibility to modify and build the aircraft locally without jewing them like the Americans would. Taiwan should order around 80 Gripens.

As cool as the Gripen is, Taiwan already has 140 F-16s. It makes more sense to double down on the F-16 due to parts compatibility versus acquiring a completely new aircraft.

That said, what I like about the Gripen is it's almost the spiritual successor to the F-5. Lightweight, able to land on unimproved runways, able to be rearmed and refueled in the field with a minimum of infrastructure, low operating costs, etc etc. The F-5 is probably my favorite fighter jet because of how simple yet robust it is. And it was very good for its day. In every engagement where they fought Mig-21s, they spanked the Migs. Obviously they're a very old aircraft at this point. But they're still used in aggressor training because in visual range fighting they're still a major threat. However... Aerial combat has been moving away from visual range combat for decades. Now it's all about extremely long range missiles and whose missiles have the longer reach. Pakistan's J-10s spanked India's Rafales purely because the J-10s had longer range missiles. None of those fighters ever even saw each other. They were firing from 150km+ away from each other. I think the missile is probably as important as the aircraft at this point. I don't think the USA or Taiwan has an air to air missile in the 200km+ range like the Chinese PL-15 or Russian R-37. Without a PL-15 / R-37 analog new jets seem a little pointless to me.

For Taiwan, those long range missiles can be hosted in island launch facilities for the bulk of their air defense. This means bigger radars on the mountain tops than any AWACS can dream of and much larger missiles.
Aircraft in this context want to be good at three things, possibly three different airframes.
>counter-SEAD defense
>antiship
>long range strike
>plus lots of AWACS and drones
With that kind of loadout, the RoC armed forces can hold the middle China Sea.
