I'll attempt to explain anime for post-2016 boomer migrant tourists who now infest this board. Imagine if Marvel, DC, Warner Bros., Disney, etc. had multiple studios that partnered with book publishers and comic book writers to produce animated series based on popular titles in their respective industries. For example, WB goes after the rights to produce an animated series based on the next Brandon Sanderson novel or whatever. These studios actively seek out new works to make adaptations of, while also growing in-house talent to work on original projects. The anime industry is in an embedded relationship with the Japanese publishing industry (light novels, novels, manga, and visual novels) and they all reinforce each other in a positive feedback loop where the anime will boost manga sales and vice-versa. And this entire industry is outside of Hollywood control (although thanks to Netflix and the growing popularity in the west that may not last for long).

It blows my mind how election tourists constantly talk about how awful western media is while belittling anime at the same time, on a fucking anime website no less.
