What categorizes someone as "White" vs. "Hispanic" in the U.S.? Like if an American police officer asks you for their race/appearance, what physical features would make them "Hispanic" instead of "White"? Spaniards are Hispanic are they not? How is it different than "White?

We have white Hispanics and know the difference between a Spaniard and a mestizos from mexico, but we have a history of the one drop rule so we lump all Hispanics, white, native, black, etc into the same category. It doesn't make much sense, but it's the norm. The majority of Hispanics being mestizos, but there is no mestizos category on the census so never refer to them as such. It's our largest growing ethnic/racial group so it's how we keep track of it.

I know some of my family is from France, Germany, Ireland, Spain/Portugal, but I don't know my mother's history because she was adopted.

for me, the line is black hair and black eyes. if you have those ,you are hispanic. it doesnt matter if youre coping with super dark brown hair and eyes. if someone has ever mistaken your hair and eye color for black, you are hispanic.

Even the darkest most indigenous goblin gets lumped in with Whites here. It’s how they can make the White crime rate and other negative statistics seem higher than they are. If we actually took all spics out of the White classification, we’d probably have a lower crime rate than Asians.

i'm 1/8 mexican and the rest northern european. i speak marginal spanish. sometimes i eat tacos. i've read some books about mexicans and mexico. i've been to mexico. there are mexicans where i live. i'm hispanic. you don't even really need the being mexican part to claim hispanic.

Hispanic means you have ancestry/come from a Spanish speaking place in south or Central America. It’s not a race nor an ethnicity, although I guess you could broadly classify it as an ethno-linguistic group in the same vein as “Slavic” or “Germanic” or “Arabic” if you consider the various mixes of peoples from that part of the world to be racially and ethnically related to one another via Amerindian tribes and Iberian blood.

The big thing is that many of the states were Mexican states that kinda have it baked into their culture, Florida, Texas, California, border states, the south west, it’s normal and pretty chill there, but now they’ve been shipping illegals to every part of the country so that even states that used to have little to no Hispanics have a sizeable population of them, they tend to stick out like a sore thumb in these places and have ghettos that might be a few blocks of stores with non-English signs. In Hispanic cultured states everything just has a Spanish theme, like most restaurants, streets, banks, towns, it can feel comfy compared to other places where it just feels forced and off.
