Historically this whole concept traces back to a time when influential puritans were trying to force every other christian denomination to worship God after their own manner, and them non-puritans were having none of it, so freedom of worship made it to the constitution for this very reason.

Notice, however, that this never meant "freedom to worship devils" in America (your options are the God of the bible or no god at all), neither does it imply that God's commandments could not be made the law of the land any more than manmade comnandments (in fact, we had a nation under God), but that's how cultural marxism works; it distorts everything and feeds it to normies who lap it up like the dogs they are.
