Most of the old ones were explored for bat guano. When you go into Most caves theres a pretty clear line on the walls close to the entrance where the bat guano began before they mined it all out for fertilizer. Once the guano was gone they had nothing to do with the land so the landowners turn them into "tourist" attractions. This nutty putty cave that the kid got stuck in was very much just that.
