Trump demands $10 Billion a year for US presence in Korea
https://asianews.network/us-president-trump-ramps-up-pressure-on-south-korea-with-defence-spending/
>A Seoul Foreign Ministry official emphasized that the 12th Special Measures Agreement (SMA) for 2026-2030, signed under former US President Joe Biden, should be upheld, ensuring South Korea pays 1.52 trillion won ($1.1 billion) in 2026 for US Forces Korea (USFK) costs, up from 1.4 trillion won. This statement follows US President Donald Trump's pressure on South Korea to increase its contribution for the 28,500 US troops stationed there, claiming Seoul pays "very little" and falsely asserting Biden reduced contributions to "nothing." Trump also announced 25% tariffs on South Korean products starting August 1, 2025, after a 90-day pause, prompting Seoul to propose a "package deal" combining trade, security, and economic issues. National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac suggested an early summit with Trump to negotiate, amid concerns Trump may demand South Korea increase defense spending to 5% of GDP, as he has with NATO allies.

FYI, South Korea's national defense budget for 2025 is approximately 61.59 trillion South Korean won (about $46.3 billion USD).

For SK it's a rock and a hard place, their economy isn't the best either since 10% of all of it is Samsung, and tech doesn't look all too promising for the future when the biggest consoomer market ever begins to die.
Japan is also getting increasingly pissed, and both of them together with China HAVE ALREADY been in talks.
The diamond-strategy to contain china (SK, JP, Vietnam, India) is also a crapshot thanks to BRICS. The alliances just don't work out as planned, and SK and JP are smelling the big poopy in the room.

South Korea is not some declawed euro country that expects the US to come save it. The ROK has mandatory conscription for every single male and every aspect of their government and infrastructure is designed around a potential round two with Kim. Every year they practice that scenario not just with their entire military (who do it twice a year) but also their entire civil government, look up "Ulchi Freedom Shield."
They already spend an enormous portion of their own defense budget on us. Camp Humphreys is one of the largest military installations on the planet and most of the cost of running it comes from the ROK already. They've been giving us over a billion dollars a year, what the fuck is Trump trying to punish them for?
Our only shot at not losing spectacularly to China in the Pacific is to have solid backup and basing from allies, and his retarded tantrums have alienated all of them and gained nothing from it.

Of course the german throws shade on the koreans now that they are a competitor in weapons sales. the poland tank deal that big of a sore spot? lol Also, saying samsung is 10% of korea's gdp is like saying Siemens is 10% of Germany's GDP.

But anyway, the thing about Korea and Japan is they both want the US out. Times have changed, the US is dying out. They want peace in their region and having the US all over the region isn't helping the situation. Even the North Korea tensions is largely due to US presence in the region.

Mark my words, if the US withdraws from Korea, Korea will build the nuke and then this will absolutely trigger Japan to demand the same.

The US is dying and I'm an American. I honestly don't want us to be involved in anyones conflict and I want to keep americans alive. other countries can fight their own battles.

The big picture you all here don't realize is that both Korea and Japan were able to use money that they would otherwise have to spend on their military to boot their tech sectors. This allowed them to grow up fast and eventually rival the US.

I'm tired of indirectly subsidizing other countries prosperity.

Vietnam and India already proved they aren't reliable actors. It was never going to work to begin with. Frankly, Japan and Korea can't be counted on in an actual war either. Japan's JDF is too weak and their citizens have been polled saying they wouldn't fight in an actual war. Korea's too small and ineffective against China; it's really just the land that's valuable because of its proximity. And they'll be the first to get hit in an actual conflict, and the onus would fall on the US to respond.

>their economy isn't the best either since 10% of all of it is Samsung
Maybe they shouldn't have done communist-style economic planning to hand over their economy to a handful of cronies. The korean economy is basically japan before the US reformed the japanese economy and busted up all the zaibatsus. Their economy being fucked by chabeols is entirely their fault for not having learned a single thing since the 90s.

How is that silly? Look at the current talk in Korea regarding Trump asking for more money for US troops. They are even saying that Korea would have to spend around 15 billion more if the US left. That 15 billion goes into other areas that help Korea develop and stay ahead in certain tech areas.

I bet you if we leave Korea and Japan, both countries will have less to put back into their strategic industries and this will erode their advantage and others will regain the lead.

You know nothing about Korea if you think their current trajectory is towards unification.
The populations that still knew their relatives on the other side have largely died off and the ROKs don't want an enormous population of destitute, malnourished dwarves to suddenly be their responsibility (and neither does China, for that matter).
There haven't been overtures towards reconciling in years and no major political party in the south will change that any time soon. The difference in messaging only varies on whether they need our help to defend themselves or whether the ROK should be the Switzerland of Asia and play the sides off each other to maintain independence.

Anon, the strongmen who ran Korea and turned it from an agrarian backwater with 0.3 pairs of shoes per capita into a resounding global success story consolidated their power by taking thousands of civilians who vaguely smelled of communism and burying them alive.
The only comparable economic miracle in human history is probably Singapore and there is no comparable rabid-frothing-hatred-for-communism miracle. If somebody like Mamdani ran for office in the ROK, he would be beaten to death by the next taxi driver he met and then the taxi driver would win the election.

Communists infight all the time. In fact, it's what they're famous for. Ever hear of the Tiananmen Square Massacres? HURR STRONGMEN CRUSHED THOSE COMMIE COLLEGE STUDENTS. And I mean that unironically, those kids were even further left than the actual communist party and were calling for a return to hardline Maoism and accusing the CPC of being corrupted by liberal western values. Calling for democracy is the oldest trick in the communist playback.

Anywho, Korea is a far-left command economy moonlighting as a liberal economy because they have credit cards to run up massive consumer debt. That's literally all it is. China's the same thing. Just because you're indirectly commanding the economy through (proportionally) massive grants and subsidies to "private" companies doesn't change that fact. Imagine if we just gave our tech companies like $2 trillion a year to cover all their opex. That's China, that's Korea, that's Taiwan, etc.

France has nukes that don’t need US permission. Only EU country with real sovereign nukes. Poland spending like 4% GDP on military now. Germany waking up too. Too slow imo but it's getting there. Europe just wasn’t allowed to build parallel forces for decades cause US wanted NATO under its thumb.

modern warfare has changed overnight

basically, any slow moving high value piece of equipment is now redundant (an exaggeration but you get the point) apart from being a drone target.

war now is missiles drones and artillery and unless you can move and deploy these assets quickly you will lose them
manpower has to be transported quickly rather than in armor
squads need mobile jamming etc

its pointless paying for a standing military so I cant see Korea doing it or just doing enough so they can start doing there own thing.

tl:dr If you dont have a huge domestic drone program, you need one

the weapons we have now make nukes seem like fire crackers. hybrid digital/biological/informational warfare run by interdimensional demons manifested as AI. with all the crazy shit cooking it will be a miracle if we don't destroy the human race, but projecting power is definitely not a problem.

>global allies
the cuck vassals in the eu can whine like the faggot bitches they are as much as they want, but their power depends on ours, and so they will always be our slaves, until they are overthrown by legitimate nationalist governments, which is our long term goal, so we just wait, and squeeze.

>you want to keep those bases and troops everywhere
no, we don't, which is the point. in the world we are entering all of that boomer shit is a massive liability. it is a big flaming pile of money that leaves us over extended in an indefensible position. the only way the US can survive is consolidating in a defensive position in the continental US and the rest of the Americas. the current military is essentially a private security force for corporations and despots who we prop up in exchange for bribes, which is a perfectly fine operating model, for a profitable private company, but not for a functional state. foreign military deployments will continue, but only on a profitable basis.

it has been changing for a while, but a lot of corrupt retards with their fingers in their ears refusing to listen as they cash their checks. ukraine just made it impossible to deny any more.

>tl:dr If you dont have a huge domestic drone program, you need one
this is crucial, but underneath this is hardened digital systems. digital weapons provide immense power but they are very difficult to secure and operate reliably in a contested environment. what we have seen in ukraine is only a small appetizer. imagine swarms of tens of millions of drones, essentially a highly maneuverable 3-dimensional cluster bomb, moving across a battlefield like a swarm of locusts destroying everything in its path. this is technically possible now, but the real sticking point is how do you control it and how do you prevent your enemies from hacking or disabling it?

I agree, but our client states act like we're reneging on our obligation to protect them from the nonexistent commie threat when try to scale down our presence due to losing money from this brand of imperialism. The truth is that they love being our colonies, since they can use the money they would be using for defense to prop up their healthcare and tech industries. Overseas US bases also funnel tons of American tax money into their local economies every time the military builds more housing and McDonald's for our zogbots and their dependas. It's fucking stupid to waste billions of dollars every year to protect yuropoors who won't even do the bare minimum to protect their own borders from negroid rape apes (they blame us for that too).
